I recently changed my email client to Mozilla Thunderbird and I wanted to move over all of my Google contacts to my local address book. Unfortunately though there didn't see to be a clear way to do this. Google will allow you to export them as vcards but you can't import vcards into Thunderbird. I did find a nifty extension for Thunderbird that will import version 2.1 vcards (link) but Google exports them as Version 3.

Well I have just committed the first version of the home brewed Diigo module to drupal.org. It's a sandbox project so you can't find it on drupal.org. it's located here. And I'll be posting a page I will be making for it here later. You can see an example of it on the bottom of this blog. I also put it in a JavaScript slideshow to display more than the top 3 bookmarks.

It's been a long while since I have posted here but it has been awhile since I have had the time to do anything with this blog. but last week I made some time to move this site over to Drupal 7. Also I had months ago completed a mock up for a new site design and now that new design is up and running on this site. (It has a Koch snowflake in the logo, which is pretty awesome as far as I'm concerned.) Also I have written a few jQuery plug-ins on the site. Namely the the code preview block that you can see now on some of the blog posts, and the new slider for the portfolio.

In my quest to become a better RoR developer/Web Designer I have come across something that has made creating CSS for websites just that much easier. Sass is a meta language that actually allows you the developer to create cleaner CSS code.

Sass actually even adds some new functionalities to CSS. It allows you to nest tags and helps you create nice semantically meaningful code.

Also I allows you to set variables in your css files. So for instance you need to use a particular color more than once you an set a variable at the top of your sass file with that color value like so:

I am a web developer hear me RoR.

I finally got some free time to sit down and and look though Sam Ruby's book Agile Web Development with Rails. Now I am in the process to come up with a couple cool ideas for some open-source RoR projects to showcse my new skills. I was thinking of redoing the whole site using RoR, prototype, and HTML5 but Drupal is working out quite well for the blog, so I was thinking of using my new found knowledge of rails for developing a facebook application.

New Site Design

Although the old design had some cool features it didn't look very good in Internet Explorer. This new design allows me to show off some CSS 3 features and still look good in IE. Also this design looks decent in older versions of IE namely the aged Internet Explorer 6. The transparent pngs on the old design looked bad although the site was functional in that browser. Unfortunately it looks like even today IE6 still holds 23% of the market share, so IE6 support is still a must with any commercial web design.

I had a little project I was working on this week to fill in the portfolio section. and I thought it would be fun to turn it in to a Drupal theme. you can see the HTML and CSS in the portfolio section I named it Pink.

You can download a copy of it to use with your own Drupal blogs or projects as I am releasing it under the GPL license. I have included the psd files in the tarball in case anyone wants to change the graphics of the theme.

For those of you who don't know what Ubuntu is, it is a a distribution of Linux and it is an operating system like Windows or OSX except that is free and open source so if your a developer you can look at the code and rewrite it as you see fit.

I finally got the site up and running and all the kinks worked out of the custom Drupal theme. It took a little longer than thought it would but Drupal despite the steep learning curve is very customizable. I was even able to get my cool stretched out carbon atom links at the top.
